Green Villain announces an artistic partnership with Kearny Point, bringing local artists to create site-specific murals across their development site.

Kearny Point is a former ship-making facility which is currently being adapted to provide office space and recreational facilities for the region. Over 10 acres of park space and several environmentally sustainable buildings will house light industrial, office space and artist studios. Kearny Point’s goal is to engage emerging businesses across the Metropolitan area in their state of the art campus which will continue to evolve for years to come.

The first installation is a spray-painted wall by Jersey City based, Distort. He was educated locally and keeps his identity shrouded while he continues to blur the lines between graffiti writer and fine artist. His style range from Caravaggio-like etched portraits to highway side graffiti that makes you wonder, “How did he do that?”

The site is located on the South West side of the Kearny Point canvas or at about 135 Central Avenue, Kearny NJ just next to the South Kearny Police Station.

We paired up with local artist Distort at the Mecca & Sons Trucking Co. for Jersey City’s largest mural project to date—16,000 sq ft to be exact. The site (580 Marin Blvd) is situated right at the mouth of the Holland Tunnel’s outbound lane which saw 15 million people pass by in 2016.

This one hundred year cold storage building sits 80’ tall by 200’ wide and still acts as a logistics facility today. To celebrate this historic building’s centennial, Distort has conceived a design that incorporates much of Jersey City’s industrial past, using key references to The Bergen Arches & Erie Cut, The Pulaski Skyway and even Frank Hague’s Medical Center (The Beacon).

Projects like this and Kobra’s “David Bowie” help Jersey City step onto the global street art stage. It has established itself as a destination with a diverse residential community and thriving small business population. This collaboration sends a significant message about Jersey City’s historic and contemporary cultural footprint.
